IIT Madras has overhauled the GATE 2027 GOAPS application - DigiLocker-based identity verification is now mandatory, you can pick up to six exam cities, and a new Robotics & Automation paper joins the list. Here's the complete walkthrough, including the official document checklist and fee structure.
GOAPS runs on a strict timeline, and this year adds a dedicated correction window. Keep your DigiLocker and documents ready well before the portal opens.
For the first time, registration through a verified DigiLocker account is mandatory for all Indian nationals. You can no longer type your demographic details manually - GOAPS pulls verified data directly from your digital vault.
Full name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, verified address, and profile picture are fetched directly from your Aadhaar-linked DigiLocker record.
Since your profile picture and name are auto-fetched from Aadhaar, an outdated photo or a spelling mismatch will carry straight into your GATE application. Update your Aadhaar record now, not on registration day.
Candidates were previously limited to 3 exam-city preferences. For GATE 2027, IIT Madras has widened that window and reshaped the allotment logic.
While filling the application, prioritise up to six preferred examination cities from the official list. Condition: all six choices must fall inside the same GATE 2027 zone — you can't mix, say, a city from the Chennai zone with one from the Bombay zone.
The 8 GATE Zones
GATE 2027 spans 300+ exam cities across these 8 zones. IIT Madras can still add, remove, or reassign a city - your final centre (visible only on the admit card) may not match any of your six choices.
Beyond DigiLocker and the 6-city rule, IIT Madras has made several other changes this cycle - most tied to the first major syllabus revision in five years.
A brand-new test paper joins the list, taking the total from 29 to 30 GATE papers this year.
Every paper's syllabus has been updated to reflect current developments - don't prep from an old-year PDF.
GOAPS captures a live photo via webcam or phone camera during registration to match your identity documents.
Sectional paper codes for Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Life Sciences have been revised — recheck your section code before submitting.
The TF paper's classification has been updated this cycle - TF aspirants should read the official brochure closely before choosing a paper combination.
Biotechnology's syllabus and its approved two-paper combination list have both been revised for GATE 2027.
Straight from IIT Madras's required documents page: keep the following ready before the portal opens. Tap an item below to check it off as you prepare.
The fee is charged per test paper - so a two-paper combination is charged twice. Payment is online-only: net banking, UPI, debit, or credit card.
| Category | Regular Fee (by 21 Sep) | Extended / Late Fee (by 30 Sep) |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC-NCL / EWS / Foreign Nationals | ₹2,000 / paper | ₹2,500 / paper |
| Female (all categories) / SC / ST / PwD | ₹1,000 / paper | ₹1,500 / paper |
The fee is non-refundable once paid, except where IIT Madras itself removes a paper combination. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates don't need to upload a category certificate for the fee concession - only SC, ST, and PwD candidates do.
No. One email address can be used for only one application. Submitting multiple applications with different emails for the same candidate leads to rejection.
Select your primary and secondary papers within a single application, using only the approved two-paper combinations. Don't register twice.
Fix it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra right away. Since DigiLocker fetching is mandatory, your scorecard will carry the exact name pulled from your verified digital ID.
Most fields lock once you proceed to payment. The correction window (14–21 Oct 2026) lets you update city, paper, or category preferences for a small additional fee — treat it as a safety net, not your first attempt.
No. Only SC, ST, and PwD candidates upload a certificate during registration to claim the fee concession. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates are typically required later, at the counselling stage.
No. International centres have been withdrawn entirely. Foreign nationals and NRIs must travel to an India-based exam centre and pay the full application fee.
No. The allotted centre printed on your admit card is final. Exam-city changes are only possible during the correction window, and only within your originally chosen zone.
For Indian nationals, manual entry is gone — GOAPS requires a verified DigiLocker to auto-fetch your identity details for GATE 2027. Set your account up well before 14 Aug 2026.
